A Jordanian company will start exporting Jordan-made Haier TV sets to the U.S., according to a report in the the Jordan Times.

According to the report, Haier Middle East Appliances Company (HMEAC), 72 percent of whose capital is owned by Jordanian investors while 28 percent by Chinese, is currently in the final stage of negotiations with U.S. buyers to sell 150,000 TV sets that were made in Jordan amounting to U.S. $30 million.

According to Moiz Imam, HMEAC chairman, the wholesale deal is only the first of its kind in terms of exporting TV sets to the U.S., noting that HMEAC has the capacity to produce and export larger quantities to the U.S. and to other countries.

"Since our factory was established last year, we have been exporting electrical and home appliances to Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, and Libya, as well as selling in the local Jordan market," Mr. Imam said. "Currently we are heading towards increasing our exports to Africa," he added.

Jordan, in recent years, has witnessed large foreign direct investments from international companies, especially Asian, which helped the country in increasing its exports from $18 million dollars in 1996 to $650 million dollars in 2003.
